Parks & Recreation

Charleston Township is proud of its many parks and recreational opportunities. The township partners with the State of Michigan and Kalamazoo County Parks & Recreation Department to bring unlimited opportunities for hiking, fishing, boating, canoeing, biking, and other outdoor activities to our residents and visitors.

The largest park located within the township is the Fort Custer State Recreational Area.

"Fort Custer Recreation Area comprises 3,033 acres located between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The terrain is typical of southern Michigan farm country, with second growth forests and remnant areas of prairie. Prairie restoration is in progress with excellent results. The area features three lakes, the Kalamazoo River and an excellent trail system. Originally farmland, the area was acquired by the federal government to establish Camp Custer, an induction and military training center for the US Army during WWII. The land was deeded to the State of Michigan under President Nixon's Legacy of Parks in 1971." (State of Michigan)

In addition, Charleston Township is home to Kalamazoo County's Cold Brook Park on East MN Avenue. The park allows easy access to Blue, Portage, and Long Lakes and allows visitors to swim, fish, hike, bike, camp, disc golf, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Additional questions regarding the parks in the township can be directed to Township Supervisor Jerry Vander Roest at the Township Hall at (269) 665-7805 or by e-mailing him at charsupervisor@charlestontownship.org.
